A historic landslide victory has transformed Hackney politics: the Green party swept to control of Hackney Council with 42 seats out of 57, up from just four in the previous council. Labour collapsed from 43 seats to just nine, while Conservatives retained six.
The Green party's unprecedented victory gives it control of three-quarters of the council and marks the highest proportion of seats the party has ever won in a principal local authority in England.
Green party candidate Zoë Garbett won the mayoral election with 35,720 votes and was re-elected as a Dalston ward councillor with 1,862 votes, though this is expected to trigger a by-election.

CLISSOLD: Greens Sam Mathys (2,479 votes) and George Grün (2,185 votes) took two seats, with Labour's Rachel Maguire (1,747 votes) retaining one after several recounts. Turnout: 46.63%.
The scale of Labour's defeat — losing 34 seats — reflects broader dissatisfaction with the national party and Starmer's leadership, with many lifelong Labour voters switching to the Greens in protest.
The new Green-controlled council will face significant challenges including housing shortages, council funding cuts, and management of the night-time economy. The party's first task is to elect a new leader and begin forming committees and setting budgets for the 2026-27 financial year.
